Sensitive Skin? Find The Products For You.

Friday, August 28th, 2009

If you have ever suffered from skin allergies, you know that shopping for moisturizer, body wash, cosmetics and other skin products can be extremely discouraging. Even for those who don’t have specific allergies, but just have very sensitive skin, can relate to the frustration spending a sizeable amount of money on what seems to be a promising product, and having to throw a whole bottle away because it causes a reaction. Well, at Douglas, we’ve tested some products that we think will suit your needs better than anything you can find at a drug store.

The fragrances, artificial colors and preservatives found in many popular skin products can be harsh on sensitive skin or skin with allergies. Our Envirorite and Lindi skin products have natural bases and extracts that provide the same functions as typical moisturizers and cleansers without harsh chemicals or detergents.

Already dealing with an itchy reaction or a sunburn? Our Lindi Cooler Pad can help soothe your skin naturally with water and aloe. Want to try a little bit of everything, to see what works for you? The Fight Back Pack will give you sample sizes of all of our Lindi allergy free skin care products– test them out, find what you like, or give them as a gift.

Nothing gets closer to you than the products you use on your face, skin, hair and in the shower. Make sure they are high quality and allergen free with help from Douglas!

What is “hypoallergenic”?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Here at Douglas, we often talk about our hypoallergenic products. Well, what exactly does hypoallergenic mean? It seems like people use this word all the time without realizing its full definition. Not all products are hypoallergenic, so what does it take to qualify?

Hypoallergenic is a term applied to products, usually cosmetics and textiles, that are designed and manufactured specifically to reduce the presence of typical allergens– pet dander, plant pollen, tree pollen, chemicals and food products. If you are an allergy sufferer, using hypoallergenic products in your home can definitely help decrease the severity of your allergic reactions.

Our hypoallergenic bedding products a created from materials that won’t aggravate your allergies or collect and harbor allergens that will trigger reactions. According to WiseGeek, “Pillows and comforters are often filled with goose down feathers or cotton. A high percentage of adults, teenagers, and children are allergic to down, cotton, or both. The feathers themselves do not cause the allergic reaction. Rather, many goose feathers trap dander, dust, and dirt, all of which can cause allergies to flare up.” Our products will help you avoid the allergens that bother you, keeping them out of the place where you are most vulnerable and where you spend the most time– your home.

Although there isn’t an industry definition for hypoallergenic, we do not use the term lightly. Our products that are dubbed “hypoallergenic” have been tested by Douglas staff to ensure their usefulness for preventing allergic reactions. Learn more in our online store.

Household Allergies? You May Need A Dehumidifier.

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

We all know about outdoor allergies that keep us inside when we’d like to be outside enjoying the warm weather. As beautiful as blooming flowers are, they make a whole lot of people shut the windows and reach for the tissues. But did you know that indoor allergies can be just as bad?

During the summer months when the humidity rises, the air in your house retains moisture, and this moist air is the perfect breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria that can grow dangerous mold. These allergens can be especially hazardous for people with asthma. Basements and crawl spaces are particularly susceptible to high humidity because they are underground and absorb moisture from the earth. By reducing the humidity level in these spaces and throughout your home, you can reduce your risk for household allergies.

Dehumidifiers are the most effective tools for lowering the humidity in your house. They literally suck the moisture from the air and turn it back into liquid- you won’t believe the amount of water that comes out of the air you’re breathing. When humidity levels dip under 50% most dust mites die and mold spores either die or become inactive, leaving you free to breathe easy. Aside from just reducing allergens, dehumidifiers also make the air in your home much more comfortable, especially if you don’t have an air conditioner. And if you’ve experienced 85 degrees with low humidity compared to 85 degrees with 70% humidity, you know the difference is palpable!

Douglas is committed to helping you reduce your allergies and increase your comfort level, which is why we offer a range of dehumidifiers and accessories designed to fit your needs. We have smaller, efficient crawlspace models and higher capacity models for entire rooms. We also carry humidity meters so you can accurately monitor the humidity levels in your home.

So banish household allergens with a dehumidifier from Douglas. Browse our convenient online store or come visit us in person at 332 Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park. You’ll be glad you did.

Outdoor Allergy Relief: Find it at Douglas

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Looking to spend time outdoors without the added hassle of allergies? During the summer months, getting the occasional breath of fresh air is something most people desire. However, allergies can make being outside more stressful than leisurely. Thankfully, there are many ways you can say goodbye to unwanted allergies – or at least minimize them – to ensure that your summer is as free and clear as it can possibly be.

Learning how to allergy-proof your garden is a great step towards enjoying the outdoors. When picking what kind of foliage you’d like in your yard, it’s important to stay conscious of your allergies. Since there are thousands of plants to choose from, selecting ones that minimize allergen exposure will be a tremendous help to both you and your sinuses. There are many allergy-friends types of flowers, which – along with safeguarding you from pollen – are sure to be a beautiful addition to any garden. A few examples of allergy-reducing flowers are daisies, roses, hibiscus, and irises. Conversely, make sure to stay away from plants high in allergens like willow trees and timothy grass, both of which will likely induce unwanted reactions on your part.

While gardening or doing other household tasks outside, it might benefit you to wear a protective face covering, such as a mask. This will help to block unwanted allergens from passing through your nose and mouth. Because of their flimsy structure, masks usually aren’t an ultimate solution to gardening with allergies, but they’ll definitely help. (more…)
